In 2024 in Torino, 2023 in Athens and 2022 in Porto, we had picnics in parks near the venues, the day before WordCamp Europe opening. All were a success and we met friends from all around the world!
We were first inspired by a similar picnic in Vienna (WordCamp Europe 2016) organised by Francesca Marano and Naoko Takano.
This event is independently organised and not related to the official WCEU organisation, even though I’m an organiser this year for the second time. It is also listed on the WCEU side-events page.

We want to create an open, relaxed moment before the conference. The picnic has now become a little tradition of its own. Every year, new people join, and past participants reconnect. It’s always a joy to see the WordPress community come together.
We’ll meet at the Kaserne Basel parc. Kaserne Basel is a cultural space with a large parc next to it and several cafés, perfect for an informal gathering.
Bring some food for yourself or to share, your smile and your curiosity. Everyone is welcome: first-time WCEU attendees, seasoned contributors, friends, partners, introverts, families with kids, and people belonging to diverse groups. Full respect is expected, in the spirit of the WordCamp’s code of conduct. There is no sign-up form this year, just come as you are.
Fancy a swim in the Rhine?
Basel is famous for its urban swimming, and WCEU even published a page to guide you: Swimming in the Rhine.
As I’m part of the WCEU organising team, I’ll need to be at the venue at 15:00 sharp along with the whole team, so I will leave around 14:45. But you’re welcome to stay at the park or go swimming after the picnic if you prefer. Alternatively, we can go swim in the Rhine before the picnic, let me know.
