This post is similar to a message I left in the Make WordPress Slack, in the #wceu channel, on 14 May 2025. I keep it short intentionally here. It contains many outside links.
The WordPress Sustainability team has been working hard, and the event handbook provided good guidelines for WordCamp organisers (Thanks Team 💚).
WordCamp Europe (hereafter: WCEU) is such a large event, it’s not always easy to be environmentally friendly, but we (the WCEU Local team) have done our best.
First of all, the venue, Congress Center Basel, part of Messe Basel Exhibition Center (link to their Sustainability page), and catering provider, Wassermann Catering, are as sustainable as possible.
We feature their efforts in the Sustainable Basel post on the WCEU website, along with lots of other information, including the sustainability initiatives of the city and canton of Basel.
We even mention that WCEU swag (T-shirts, tote bags, as well as the event lanyards) is made from fair trade cotton and GOTS-certified inks by Ecographic, a eco-friendly printing company from Lausanne.
We also encourage train travel; for more information, check out Travelling to Basel and Getting around by renting a bike or using public transports (free for visitors).
The water in Basel is clean (drinking from tap, fountains, groundwater, Rhine, etc) and Urban swimming is a very popular activity in Basel, more information in this wonderful post Swimming in the Rhine (pack your swimsuit!).
The Travel information page features all WCEU posts and pages about Basel.
We hope you’ll follow all these links! We look forward to welcoming you to Sustainable Basel next week.
